About us
Mission
Our mission is to facilitate high-quality, efficient patient discharge from Emergency Departments in Canada. We aim to achieve this by providing a platform for sending condition-specific patient discharge instructions (PDIs) to patients via text message.
Information sources
The PDIs on this site come from open-access sources across the web. Among other sources, we use PDIs from the Canadian Discharge Instruction Set (CDIS), a nascent project focused on creating high-quality, condition-specific PDIs that have been reviewed by doctors, patient/family partners, and Indigenous partners for medical accuracy, completeness, comprehensibility, cultural safety, and practical utility. CDIS PDIs will initially be translated into French, a few other commonly used languages in Canada, and selected Indigenous languages.
Limitations
The use of this website (and the referenced PDIs) is not intended to replace the conversation a physician should have with a patient prior to discharge. For more information, see the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) guidance on informed discharge. Instead, this tool is designed to facilitate and enhance that conversation.
Our team
This website was designed and implemented by Bryan Renne with design and technical advice from Puneet Kapur. Both Bryan and Puneet are Emergency Medicine Physicians in Saskatoon with backgrounds in Computer Science. Their partner and the other research lead for the CDIS is James Stempien, also an Emergency Medicine Physician in Saskatoon.
Funding
Funding for the creation of the initial PDIs for the Canadian Discharge Instruction Set comes from a Canada Health Infoway Connected Care Innovation Grant.
